The Museum of Ethnology, Hanoi, Vietnam: The museum reflects the culture and daily life of the 54 ethnic groups living in Vietnam. A few interesting facts... *Ede longhouse is the residence for families of daughters & grand daughters who descended from one mother. One large main area and one small bedroom for each family. *The Bahnar communal house is used for village ceremonies and as a home for adolescent boys being taught Bahnar history, the role of men and hunting skills. *Viet wooden house is built low to follow custom that houses should not be higher than temples. Included in the house are areas for ancestor worship and learning. *Muongs believe we have multiple souls. The one governing everyday life is bia. The higher one is wai. After a funeral, the wai starts its journey through limbo to another world and the bia remains near the corpse disintegrating along with the remains. The wai becomes a ghost and may turn to evil deeds, venting its wrath on relatives, if they dont properly dispose of the dead body. *Giarai communal tomb is surrounded by wooden figures symbolizing fertility. They are intended to accompany the dead into the afterlife.
