The Muslims in Myanmar are called the Rohingya people. They descend from Indian, Chinese, and in smaller amounts from earlier Arab settlers. They have been mercilessly persecuted in Burma/Myanmar for centuries and they are still currently denied citizenship. Those who can, run away to neighbouring countries seeking refuge. Even Amnesty International has been speaking out about this for years as a major human rights violation and the UNHCR has attempted to assist the Rohingya people to be repatriated to Bangladesh in order to avoid abuse. We tend to assume that because someone calls themselves Buddhist, that they are automatically peaceful; and that if they are Muslim they are violent. Nothing can be further from the truth.
