The Myanma Port Authority building on the corner of Strand Road - TopicsExpress

The Myanma Port Authority building on the corner of Strand Road and Pansodan Street is an imposing structure dating back to 1928. The façade details around the windows are, similar to the Lloyds’s Bank, in green ginkgo leaf shape formed by what appear to be staggered roof tiles. The Corinthian double columns between the arched windows are topped by a circular seal depicting different ships. The building’s corner is marked by a rectangular tower with a pitched red tile roof and a blue strip reading “Myanma Port Authority” in white lettering. The entrance roof has a very slight arch in its middle, possibly increasing the height of its load bearing member, thus increasing the strength of this large cantilever. Using the Myanma Port Authority as our literary “anchor”, we will comment on the history of Yangon’s riverfront and possible future uses.
