The Myth of the "fat burning" zone: Almost everyone has seen the slow-paced "fat burning" zone that is placed on cardio machine display panels to help you stay in the “fat burning” zone. The idea and misguided belief is that long, lower intensity training is better for fat loss than shorter high intensity workouts. This is just another example of misinterpreted information frequently passed on from trainer to client. The truth is the best fat burning workout is simply the one that burns the most calories. At lower intensities your body will oxidize (burn) a higher PERCENTAGE of fat and as intensity increases you begin to draw on a higher percentage of carbohydrates in the form of blood glucose and glycogen (carbohydrate stored in muscles). In fact, if you really wanted to be in a “fat burning” zone your best bet would be to lie completely motionless. In this state you would use the highest percentage (nearly 99 percent) of fat for fuel. However, the reality is that calories are key and the more you burn, the closer you get toward achieving your weight-loss/fat loss goals. So even though the percentage of calories used from fat is higher the TOTAL calories burned would be lower. The bottom line is the fuel SOURCE your body uses for energy is simply not critical.
