The NASTF Fall 2014 General Meeting featured a presentation, titled Vehicle Diagnostics and Programming Under the MOU, an outcome of the recent Massachusetts Right To Repair Bill. Steve Douglas, Senior Director for Environmental Affairs at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, noted the bill required automakers to come up with a standardized interface to allow independent professional repairers access to the onboard control modules. Douglas explained how this solution might be brought to life. “It’s actually a great time to be in the automotive industry,” he says, noting the progress into more efficient vehicles and expansion of diagnostic service technology onto off-the-shelf laptop computers connected to vehicles through improved versions of the J-2534 black box device.” ow.ly/FCPyA
