The NBAs Billionaire Owners It’s little surprise that it takes a rich person, if not several, to have the capital required to buy a pro sports team. In the NBA, the average team is now worth $634 million, and even the least valuable team – the Milwaukee Bucks – is worth more than $400 million. That’s why of the league’s 30 teams, 14 are owned, at least in part, by a billionaire. Six of those billionaire owners have fortunes in excess of $5 billion. The 14 billionaire team owners have a combined fortune of $76 billion, though the top three control more than half of that wealth. The wealthiest of the group is Portland Trail Blazers owner and Microsoft MSFT +2.07% co-founder Paul Allen, who is worth $15.8 billion. Allen is closely followed by Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian oligarch worth $13 billion, and Philip Anschutz, the Lakers owner who sits atop a $10.3 billion self-made fortune.
