The NEW versus The OLD! Since it is a time for thinking about the OLD and the NEW (old year out, new year in), think about these OLD things passed way and these NEW things that have come. The Bible is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament, yet few people understand the full meaning of this separation. Many are still trying to live by both the Old and the New testaments. We need to notice not only the emphasis placed on “old” and “new,” but also what the differences are, and which of the two is valid for man’s salvation in this present century? To do this we must note what the Bible specifically teaches concerning the NEW. GOD HAS GIVEN US A NEW KING, JESUS the CHRIST: (Matthew 2:2) “Saying, Where is he that born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him”; Matthew 21:5) “Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass”; also (Revelation 1:5) “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed from our sins in his own blood.” GOD HAD GIVEN US A NEW COVENANT: (Hebrews 8:6-8,13) “But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. {7} For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. {8} For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:… {13} In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.” GOD HAS MADE JESUS OUR NEW MEDIATOR: (Hebrews 12:24) “And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.” GOD HAS MADE JESUS OUR NEW HIGH PRIEST: (Hebrews 4:14-15) “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.{15} For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”; and (Hebrews 7:28) “For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated forevermore.” THEREFORE, GOD HAS GIVEN US A NEW RELIGION: (Galatians 1:13) “For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted thechurch of God, and wasted it:” In this verse Paul speaks of the “Jews religion,” meaning it was his former religion, but in verse 23 he speaks of a new faith (a new religion) which he now preached: (Galatians 1:23) “But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.” GOD HAS GIVEN US A NEW NAME: (Isaiah 62:2) “And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name”; and (Acts 11:26) “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” HAVING DESTROYED THE OLD COVENANT, WE ALL CAN NOW BE ONE NEW MAN: (Hebrews 8:13) “In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away”; and (Ephesians 2:15) “Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace.” From these verses there can be NO doubt that the NEW is entirely separate from the OLD, and that the NEW COMPLETELY REPLACES THE OLD. How can some people so greatly confuse the issue. Can it be that they simply will not be honest with the scriptures? —John D. Cotham Shady Valley, TN
