The NRA tells us that millions of Americans use guns for self defense every year. Thats a lie. That number comes from a telephone survey, where people were asked if they had ever used a gun for self defense. When you really look at the details of the few dozen people responding affirmatively, most were describing situations in which they felt threatened (such as a verbal altercation) in which their solution was to pull out a gun (which is not self defense--its illegal brandishing). And of course its problematic to scale up the responses of a few dozen survey respondents to represent the experience of millions of gun owners, but the NRA doesnt mind as long as the message supports a narrative that helps sell more guns. How often are guns REALLY used for self defense? Websites that try to document these cases can only come up with about 1300 incidents per year, compared to 32,000 gun deaths and 85,000 nonfatal gun injuries per year. So rather than blame this mom alone, lets also blame the lying liars who lied to her and told her concealed carry was the best choice for her familys safety.
