The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for late Monday night and Tuesday morning for the Canadian storm that I’ve been highlighting the past several days, arriving around 1-3 a.m. in the Columbus area. The timing is very problematic because moderate snow will likely be falling during the Tuesday morning commute before the snow tapers off mid-morning. Due to the frigid air, we can squeeze more snow out of lesser amounts of moisture due to a fluffier snowflake texture. Snowfall with these fast-moving systems tracking southeast across the lower Ohio Valley with briefly intense snow rates typically ranges from 2-5 inches, from south to north, with an average of 4 inches. The secondary issue will be strong winds and bitter cold arriving on the back side of the storm Tuesday night and Wednesday, driving readings down into the single digits and teens, with wind chill values of -10/-20—coincidentally on the anniversary of last winter’s polar vortex visitation! The mild Pacific pattern finally broke, but unlike last year, the bitter cold will moderate faster, evident by readings reaching the 30s next weekend.
