The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower The writer of Proverbs - TopicsExpress

The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower The writer of Proverbs likened the Name of the Lord to a strong tower into which the righteous flee for safety. Proverbs 18:10 ¶ The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. In ancient times, towers were built in open land as fortresses to guard against marauders, much as castles were used in medieval times. These towers had thick masonry walls and foundations which could sustain an attack from the enemies. They were designed for storage of food and water and were able to accommodate many people. Jesus is our tower. He is our solid rock (De.32:31). He is our fortress and shelter in the time of storm (Ps. 71:3, 91:22, 144:2; Is. 32:2). He also feeds us with the bread of life (Jn. 6:51) and He lets us drink freely from the waters of salvation (Is. 12:3). The name JESUS denotes all of the attributes and character of God. It reminds us of all that God has been, all that He is, and all that He will be in the future (He. 13:8). When Jesus prayed to His Father saying, “I have declared Thy name…” He was simply saying I have demonstrated your Deity, righteousness, holiness, power and authority, etc. for all to see (Jn. 12:28, 17:26: He. 2:12). This is the name of the Lord God who will sit upon the throne of David (Ps. 132:11; Ac. 2:30). This is the name in Whom all things in heaven and earth are to be gathered together in One, even in Christ (Ep. l:l0). This is the name far above all principality and power, and every name that is named not only in this world, but also in that which is to come (Eph. l:2l). This is the name of Jehovah that we are told to call on and make mention that His name is exalted. (Isa. l2:4). This is the highly exalted name to whom we all are going to bow and confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:9-ll), the everlasting Father, whom Isaiah said would be a Son born, and a child given, Immanuel, God with us. (Isa. 9:6, 7:l4). The name of Jesus is the only name given by which we can obtain eternal salvation (Ac. 4:12). So how do enter into the strong tower of His name and receive eternal life? Simply by believing and obeying God and trusting in His name (Jn. 20:31). When we believed on His name, we were born of God and given power to become His sons (Jn. 1:12-13). Jesus said that repentance and remission of sins would be preached in His name, beginning at Jerusalem (Lu. 24:47). At Pentecost, Peter was the first to follow this command (Ac. 2:38), and we see the same pattern of repentance and water baptism followed throughout the book of Acts (Ac. 10:48, 16:5, 19:5). When we enter the tower of the name of Jesus we find the attributes, character and power of God, for Jesus claimed all power of heaven and earth (Matt. 28:l8). 1 Corinthians 1:24 tells us that Jesus is both the power and the wisdom of God. If I desire wisdom, righteousness, holiness, power, love, mercy, understanding, knowledge, or any of the many attributes of God, I will find them in Jesus, when I call on His name. All of the authority of God is contained in His name, for Jesus said that whatever we ask in His name, He would do it (Jn. l4:l4). Believers were empowered to preach the gospel in His name, cast out devils, speak with new tongues, take up serpents, and lay hands on the sick and see them recover (Mk. 16:15-16). When I enter this tower, I have need of nothing else, for Colossians 2:l2 tells me that in Him dwells all the fullness of the Deity bodily, and that I am complete in Him. If I desire to be a perfect man, I can obtain perfection according to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Eph. 4:l3). All that I can learn of God is in Christ Jesus, who is the express image of the invisible God (Col. l:l5), and the very brightness of His substance (Heb. l:3). The winds are blowing, Satan is raging (1 Pe. 5:8). Scripture tells us that everything that can be shaken, will be shaken (Mt. 24:29; He. 12:27). Aren’t you glad that you have entered into the safety of the tower that God has provided, the precious name of Jesus? Somebody Has Said How sweet the name of Jesus sounds In a believers ear! It soothes his sorrows, Heals his wounds, And drives away his fear. - John Newton, Olney Hymns youtube/watch?v=-RNMmzChxdY
