The Namibia Wholesale and Retail Workers Union has expressed concern about -- what it terms -- constant assaults of its officials by the management of the Chinese-owned Sun Square Hotel at Oshikango in the Ohangwena Region. Its Secretary-General, Victor Hamunyela, singles out last Fridays incident where an Oshikango Branch Coordinator was allegedly assaulted by the hotel Manager Peter Wang. Hamunyela explained that Wang allegedly attacked Gervasius Haimbodi for refusing to have a meeting with him. He further alleged that Peter also assaulted another union official, Alpheus Teofilus, in June. Hamunyela said the Oshikango Branch Coordinator has in the meantime laid an assault charge against Wang. The union also accused the Chinese employer of failing to pay his employees decent salaries, saying all 16 hotel employees were paid 400 Namibia dollars per month. Approached for comment, Peter Wang rubbished the unions accusations, saying he was the one who was attacked to the extent of sustaining a bloody nose. Peter said he merely defended himself and did not initiate the attack. He indicated that he had opened a case of assault with the Oshikango police against Haimbodi. Wang further accused the union representative of not respecting foreign employers, particularly the Chinese. With regard to the remuneration of his employees, Wang indicated that he paid his casual workers 500 Namibia dollars a month, while the permanent employees received a monthly salary of between one-thousand and two-thousand-500 dollars.
