The Nasarawa State House of Assembly is angry at the state governor’s penchant for rejecting and disobeying lawmakers’ resolutions and laws; and has decided to summon the governor to its chambers. This was disclosed by the Majority Leader in the Assembly, Godiya Akwashiki, representing Nasarawa Eggon west(PDP). Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday, Mr. Akwashiki said that the Assembly might be forced to invite the governor if he continues to flout its resolutions amidst other alleged constitutional violations. The assembly leader, who spoke after deliberations on the report of the House committee on education over the sack of the management of the Nasarawa State University, said Mr. Al-Makura has no right to sack the management of the university without the consent of the school’s governing council. He explained that the governor’s action violates section 17 subsection I and 2 and section 18 subsections 6 establishing the state university which stipulates that the governor can hire and sack the management of the university with the recommendation of the council. ‘’The sack of the management of the university is unlawful and is null and void, he (Mr. Al-Makura) should bring them back,” the lawmaker said. “We are trying to correct the system but in case he refuses, we are not witch-hunting anybody”. He added that the State Assembly has inaugurated a committee that will monitor the implementation of its resolutions and laws and report on the progress of such matters. “One of the core functions of the Assembly is to expose corruption and try to make sure we correct, we can bring the governor to tell him to do this and that,” he said. At the premises of the state’s transport company, popularly known as ‘on the Move’, the majority leader berated the executive for flaunting the order of the assembly over the re-opening of the company and sack of its Managing Director, Philip Iyakwari. According to him, the committee will report back to the House and might invite the governor if the 24 members of the house agreed. He said that the governor may be invited to explain why the Mr. Iyakwari is still in office, despite the lawmaker’s ordering his sack; adding that the staff had confirmed that the managing director was still occupying his office. “For now we consider that the Governor is not respecting the law and resolution of the House and if he refuse to listen we will term it misconduct,” it said. Sack of varsity heads, illegal Earlier, during its deliberations, the State Assembly declared the sack of the management of the state university as unlawful and directed the state governor to reverse the sack of the management. Announcing the decision of the Assembly, the speaker, Musa Mohammed, said that the House adopted the recommendation of its committee on education which recommended the reversal of the sack. The Assembly also summoned the state’s Commissioner for Justice, Innocent Lagi, to appear before it on Wednesday to give reasons why he did not provide documents stating reasons for the suspension of the state university management as promised. It also accused the governor of being a major cause of the university’s misfortune following his alleged refusal to release funds and visit the university two years after assuming office. Francis Orogu, representing Keana constituency, claimed Mr. Al-Makura is intent on closing the University for political reasons. He said the reasons for the sack of the management, which includes lack of physical structure, depreciation of academic performance, and bad financial administration, is not enough as the Nigerian University Commission only recently rated the University as one of the 10 best state universities in Nigeria.
