The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), as a responsible organization entrenched with democratic values, wish to completely condemn the Tuesday’s show of shame at the Rivers State House of Assembly. We regard the kangaroo impeachment of Rt. Hon. Omatabala Amarchee by a group of five Legislators allegedly loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Nysom Wike, as illegal, criminal, unlawful, and abuse of law, democratic and legislative processes. Our questions are: how would five out of a legislative house of thirty two members pronounced their Speaker impeached? Are we still in a democratic state? Has minority decision been recognized as the Alpha and Omega over majority decision in Nigerialisation’s democracy? This is completely anarchism, lawless, and shocking! We wish to assert without being partial that Nigerian Students no longer have confidence in Joseph Mbu as the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. We chastise Joseph Mbu for being partial and unprofessional while discharging his duties. Under the watchful eyes of the men of Nigeria Police, assembly mace was destroyed, Honourable members threw punches at each other, many legs and bones were broken, eyes were bashed, teethes were removed; what a disgrace! This is dishonorable and atrocious! We also consider the media attack unleashed on the Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi by the Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu as an act of unbridled shenanigan, insubordinationand disrespect to constituted authority. We condemn in totality the strategic support given to the shameless five anti-Amaechi Legislators by President Goodluck Jonathan. The hypocritical, phony, spurious and unstatemanship response of the Senior Special Assistant to Mr. President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe that “Amaechi is too small for Jonathan to fight” has clearly shown that the five dishounorable legislators are playing the scripts of some hopeless Abuja based Politicians. That there is no love lost between Amaechi and President Jonathan is known to the general public. While we salute the Aminu Tambuwa led members of the Federal House of Representativesfor their prompt reaction to the imbroglio, we consider the action of Senate President, David mark as two-faced, disingenuous, deceitful and hypocritical. As we write, we do not really know the stand theSenators democratically elected by Nigerians have taken over the crisis. Consequent upon the above, the leadership ofNANS under Yinka Gbadebo, in recognition of the unrestrained expectations of her members in Rivers State and the entire country, wishes to call on President Goodluck Jonathan and the Nigeria Police to quickly address the following demands within 7 daysor risk mass protests that may shut down Rivers State. 1. Immediate suspension of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police for disrespecting constituted authority (Governor Amaechi), and for being partial and unprofessional; 2. Indefinite arrest and prosecution of the fiveLegislators that carried out the yeoman job that had shut down the peace and tranquility of Rivers State since Tuesday; 3. Immediate taken over of the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly by the Federal House of representatives. Lastly, for the sake of posterity and at the risk of repetitiveness, similitude and monotony, we wish to state categorically that what happened in Rivers State on Tuesday was totally undemocratic, utterly idiotic and absolutely illegal. Long Live Democracy! Maxwell Adeyemi Adeleye, For: Yinka Gbadebo, President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)
