The National Cathedral in Washington, DC, is physically inspiring. Of that there is no doubt. But sometimes what is even more inspiring is what goes on in and around the cathedral close. On Sunday 22 June, the guest preacher was the Rev. Dr. Cameron Partridge. The Rev. Dr. Cameron Partridge is an Episcopal priest, theologian, and openly transgender man. He is the Episcopal chaplain at Boston University and lecturer and counselor to Episcopal/Anglican students at Harvard Divinity School. He has advocated for passage of transgender non-discrimination legislation in both secular and ecclesial contexts, including the 2012 General Convention of the Episcopal Church, which voted to bar discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression in all levels of church governance and in access to the ordination process. He was the first openly transgendered person to preach at the National Cathedral.
