The National Green Tribunal has issued notice for stay on the construction of the Tiracol bridge. Though the villagers of Tiracol have been crying for a simple bridge for several years, the Goa govt ignored their plea. The villagers even asked for simple cementing of the ramps that give access to the existing ferries which connect their village to the rest of Goa, so that people with scooters and motorcycles did not have to venture on sand before they reached the road from the ferry. All requests fell on deaf years. One thing we all know is that all governments are well and truly deaf. However, when Ms Leading Hotels wanted a bridge to access their proposed golf course, they took the government to a Mapusa ear-doctor and got its ears cleaned. Now the government could hear even whispers. It agreed overnight to construct a Rs.77 crore bridge to accommodate the golf course owners. The design of the bridge is supplied by the company according to a company press note. The government is footing the bill with public money it milks from the Goencars. This is the way the world continues to be constituted. A year after he took charge (in 2013), present CM Manohar Parrikar accused the Congress of taking Rs.40 crores in bribes to clear the golf project. But now he has also become its principal patron and supporter! For those who do not know, Leading Hotels claims to have purchased 12.5 lakh sq.metres of the village, leaving the village 1 lakh sq.mts., mostly for their houses, burial ground and a garbage management site for the golf course! Future of Goas villagers to come. Why arent Goans getting really pissed off with this kind of development? Should we start constructing a museum to ourselves since that is the only way left to remember extinct species?
