The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) has presented four schools with useful tools that should assist them in enhancing the disaster management programme at the institutions. Director of NODS Philmore Mullin handed over information kits, evacuation maps and other implements to TN Kirnon Primary, Adele School, the School for the Deaf and the Nyahbinghi Theocracy Church School. This is made possible under “The Living School project”, a joint initiative of the OECS, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the government of Brazil. “Out of this project we were able to develop an information kit for all the schools, develop evacuation maps and also develop some signs and some basic tools that will allow teachers and principals to have a more interactive process in terms of student/teacher and the disaster management programme. Some schools especially those with large population will get mega horns, some will get rope for those that have smaller children so the children will hold the rope and just follow their teacher to the assembly area”, Mullin said. Mullin commends the TN Kirnon School for leading the way in disaster management efforts and the news ones that have come on board. Principal of TN Kirnon Rolston Nickeo spoke on behalf of the recipients. “We would like to say thanks to the NODS office. Disaster management is very important to us here at TNK. For many years we have been working along trying to develop several plans and we are always happy when NODS gets on board with us and we partner so that we can put certain things in place. Today again is another partnership where we are receiving some tools that will aid us in our efforts to make sure that disaster management is taught and practised and drilled in the schools at all times”, Nickeo said. Other schools will be presented with their packages over time.
