The position may be extended for an additional year for a total of 24 months. Pathways Internship Program Eligibility: You must have been accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma or certificate) in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time (as defined by your educational institution) basis. A qualifying educational institution includes an accredited high schools or home-school curriculum, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year colleges or universities, and graduate or professional schools. You must provide a copy of your transcripts, registration, or other proof that you meet the requirement for the Pathways Internship Program. Service in a Pathways Program confers no right to further employment in the competitive or excepted service however, an agency may non-competitively convert Interns within 120 days following the successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements, to a position in the competitive service under a term position lasting 1-4 years, or a permanent career-conditional or career appointment. Interns must complete 640 hours of work in order to be eligible for conversion to the competitive service or meet one or more of the exceptions granted for a credit of up to 320 hours. DUTIES: Back to top Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Conduct basic research of topics for the purpose of providing interpretive programs both orally and/or writing for general visitors and children. Staff the information desk and inform visitors about park facilities and resources. Operate a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive material, e.g., projectors, cassettes and video equipment. Perform various administrative duties, e.g., scheduling, gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, etc. Provide assistance in connection with special events or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: In order to qualify for a GS-5 Park Ranger (Interpretation) Student Intern, you must meet the following education and/or specialized experience requirements: A. Successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelors degree in an accredited college or university with 24 semester hours of related course work with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history (includes public history, civil war studies, and American studies), archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 or higher grade level in the Federal service, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: Park guide, or tour leader; Law enforcement or investigative work; Archaeological or historical preservation research work; Forestry and/or fire management in a park, recreation, or conservation area; Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. In addition, this specialized experience must also involve: Working in a visitor center or information kiosk in a park, historical site, outdoor education center, or comparable informational visitor-oriented operation; serving as a front-line representative of an organization to greet customers and answer questions; educating customers regarding rules, regulations, and safety concerns; presenting informational talks, guided tours, and demonstrations, following a prescribed outline, to various audiences to inform or educate; and utilizing basic interpretive techniques (such as metaphors, storytelling, analogies) to facilitate intellectual and/or emotional connections between audiences interests and their surroundings. -OR- C. Possess a combination of education as described in letter A above and specialized experience as described in letter B above, which when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. Note: Only education in excess of 2 years (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) of undergraduate education may be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of education, first determine the total number of hours that exceed 2 years of undergraduate level education; then divide the total number of your excess semester hours by 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours are equivalent to one year of full-time undergraduate study, or use your schools definition of one year of study). To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together.
