The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the two life terms and five years that were handed to Fabianus Heelu Fillipus. The message sent by the court is unambiguous that the killing of police will not be tolerated. An attack on the police is an attack on the society at large. As the NPA we will continue to play our part to ensure that those who kill police officers who are doing their duties to protect our society, are prosecuted successfully and pay dearly for their actions. We are happy that the court agreed with us that the only suitable sentence for this crime was life imprisonment. We know that this sentence will not bring back the loss suffered by the families but we hope they find solace in knowing that the man who killed their loved one will not walk free to harm other people again. We want to thank residents of Mandela Park, Hout Bay, who played a very important role which led an arrest and a successful prosecution in this matter. They came forward and gave valuable information to the police and became State witnesses. We also take our hats off to the other Namibian nationals residing in Mandela Park who pulled police officers aside at the scene of the crime and gave them valuable information which led to the arrest and the conviction of the accused. The residents of Hout Bay have played an exemplary role in this case which needs to be emulated by other communities in order for us to succeed in the fight against crime. We appeal to all other communities to come forward and assist us with evidence they have and be state witnesses when we go to court in order for to successfully prosecute these cases. The days of ‘is nie my besigheid nie, it’s not my business and asiyondaba yam’ are over. We are in this together.
