The National Water Commission (NWC) is condemning the act of vandalism that has been committed against its Bridgewater system in St. Ann – the third time in recent months. The latest incident involved the brazen theft of cables, which has forced the closure of the facility and will cost the Commission approximately one million Jamaican dollars to replace. The unconscionable act brought operations at the Bridegwater facility to an abrupt halt and customers in Bridgewater, Primrose Hill, Discovery Heights and Discovery Bay were left without piped water. The NWC’s management have denounced this latest incident, noting that these unscrupulous activities undermine the NWC’s efforts to improve its systems and extend access to potable water. In recent times, it has cost the NWC approximately five million Jamaican dollars to replace items following two other incidents of theft at the Bridgewater facility. In fact, over the years the NWC has experienced several acts of vandalism which destabilize its operations and add undue financial strain on the company. The NWC is urging the public to join in partnership to protect Jamaica’s water supply facilities. The Commission is also encouraging individuals with information about this recent incident to call the St. Ann police at 972-2373. At the same time, the NWC is assuring customers in the affected areas that every effort is being made to restore water at the earliest possible time. In the meantime, the company will provide trucked water.
