The National Youth Sports Program tried from 1968 to 2004 to infuse swimming into our culture. Swimming pools in black communities are/were almost non-existent. The City of Jackson, Mississippi closed all public pools when the courts ordered full integration in 1963. There were no public swimming pools for black people in Jackson from 1963-1987 as a generation had no public access to swimming. But, lost in this explanation is, before court ordered integration of pools in Jackson, black people never had public swimming pools in Jackson since its founding until 1987. Jackson State University had an indoor and an outdoor pool for several years and offered free swimming lessons to 1000 black children and youth in the City of Jackson! It still has an indoor pool with limited access. Public pools are now scattered throughout the city.
