The Need For A Leadership Institute. It has for a while been bothering me that perhaps we have not done the proper thing before our democratic process began in 1999. I have this feeling that perhaps things would have been fairer or better than it is presently if our political leaders were mandated to take up courses on leadership, nationhood etc in a national institution (something similar to National Institute of Strategic Studies, Kuru), before they could stand for public offices. At such institute, the students/leaders would be taught courses on the history of Nigeria - how we became a nation, what binds us together, the sacrifices our forefathers made for the unity and freedom of the nation etc. The courses should also include factors that will instill patrotism in the hearts of all Nigerians, such that a citizen would love his country to the extent that he could decide to die for her. The institute should also address issues of leaders being the servants of the people and not rulers of people. Leaders that will be prepared to make sacrifices for the well being of the led. Leaders that are prepared to lead by examples; leaders that would believe in Nigeria, buy Nigeria and use what is produced in Nigeria. The students of this institute should also be made to have a knowledge of the military by serving in one of the forces for a period of time. On economy, the students should be taught some basic facts on national economy. I believe if this is done, we would have at least sieved out some opportunists, jobless, selfish and unserious self imposed politicians who are prepared to kill, maim and destroy in other to get to power.
