Stop in and say hello to the volunteer Master Gardeners & Jude...PLANT SCIENCE DAY 2014 PRESENTED BY THE CONNECTICUT AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION Date: Wednesday, August 6, 2014 Time: Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Program begins at 10:00 a.m. Event 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Where: Lockwood Farm The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station 890 Evergreen Avenue Hamden, CT 06518 Hamden, CT--The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) invites you to attend Plant Science Day 2014. This annual event is held at Lockwood Farm, the Stations 75-acre research farm located in Hamden, CT. It features a day of scientific inquiry, discovery, and updates on research advances in agriculture, food safety, the environment and public health. The event is free, open to the public and takes place rain or shine. Among the highlights of the day are the Century Farm Award, the Samuel W. Johnson Memorial Lecture, and a visit from Governor Dannel P. Malloy, President of the Experiment Stations Board of Control, who is scheduled to speak late morning. The Century Farm Award is presented to a farm that has been in family operation for more than 100 years. This years award will go to Holdridge Farm Nursery in Ledyard, CT. The Memorial Lecture, named for Professor Johnson, director of the Station from 1877 to 1900, was established as a forum to discuss issues of concern to Connecticut residents and the Station. This years lecture, \223Climate Change and Agriculture: No Longer Business as Usual\224 will be presented by Dr. Mike Hoffmann, Director, Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Professor, Department of Entomology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Additional oral presentations by CAES scientists will include \223Managing the Roadside Forest: Balancing Aesthetics and Utility Reliability,\224 \223Nanoparticles in Agriculture,\224 and \223Honey Bees and Bumble Bees-Their Problems, and What You Can Do to Help\224. This years technical demonstrations are \223Compost: How to Make and Use in Your Garden\224 and \223Common Garden Weeds.\224 Plant Science Day offers many opportunities for attendees to discuss science topics on an informal basis with CAES scientists at their research plots. Poster displays in the main barn will highlight several of the Stations current research programs. There will be opportunities to visit over 90 field plots and exhibits, as well as participate in walking and riding tours and activities for children, such as the \223Passport for Kids.\224 Experts will be available to answer questions on plant identification and disease diagnosis, soil testing, and weed and insect identification. Media are also invited for on-site interviews with CAES scientists about their research projects and other services and programs at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.
