The New Year is almost here and Canton Parks and Recreation is preparing to make this year more exciting than ever by offering new and returning events and programs! cantonrec.org/info/default.aspx Recreational Hoops Basketball Learn the basic skills and fundamentals of basketball: dribbling, shooting, and passing. Practices are focused on the very basics of basketball using smaller balls and shorter hoops. Classes include a mix of warm ups, drills & games. Dates: Kindergarten-Tues: 1/06-2/10 1st & 2nd grade-Wed: 1/07-2/11 Time: 3:40-4:40pm Location: CBPS Gym Fee: $50.00 ($60.00 NR) ACROfitness This program is an action packed fitness, dance, acrobatic program that the kids will love! They get to have a great time while exercising and staying fit! Check out their website to see more: ACROfitness. Dates: Session I-Wednesdays, 1/7-2/11 Session II- Wednesdays, 2/25-4/1 Time: 3:40-4:40pm Location: CBPS Gym Fee: $60.00 ($70.00 NR) Winter Themed Cookie Decorating Class (Ages 6-14) Hands on cookie decorating class in which the participants will learn the basics of the outline and flood method of cookie decoration. They will also cover techniques like polka-dotting, feathering, and secondary decoration. Prepared icing, decorating sugars, and cookies will be provided. Each participant will take home their drying creations in a bakery box. Date: Friday, 1/16 Time: 1:30-3:00pm Location: CCC Fee: $25.00 ($35.00 NR) For the Love of Dance- Ballet and Jazz Introduction to Ballet and Jazz (Ages 4-7) This introductory dance class will grow students’ coordination and rhythmic skills while introducing basic ballet and jazz techniques and dance terminology in an upbeat and caring atmosphere. Pink or black leotard/tights, ballet shoes, and jazz shoes are encouraged. Intermediate Ballet and Jazz (Ages 8-12) In this faster moving ballet/jazz combo class students will learn beginning and intermediate techniques and combinations while working on musicality and expression through dance in an encouraging and challenging environment. Pink or black leotard/tights, ballet shoes, and jazz shoes are encouraged. Dates: Saturdays, 1/17- 2/21 Time: Beginner 10:30-11:30am Intermediate 11:30am-12:30pm Location: CCC Fee: $65.00 (75.00 NR) Mini-Hawks Sports Camp This multi-sport program was developed to give children a positive first step into athletics. Our Mini-Hawk games and activities were designed to teach the essentials of T-ball, basketball and soccer. Participants will explore balance, movement, hand/eye coordination, and skill development at their own pace. Dates: Thursdays, 1/22-2/26 Time: 3:40-5:00pm Location: CBPS Fee: $95.00 ($105.00 NR) Jedi Lego Engineering Young Jedi will explore worlds far, far away and engineering principles right in front of them. Defeat the Empire by designing and refining LEGO X-Wings, R2-units, and settlements on far-flung edges of the galaxy. Imagination and engineering combine to create motorized and architectural projects such as energy catapults, shield generators and defense turrets. Imagine and building unique and fun projects with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well Instructor while exploring the Star Wars universe. Dates: Fridays, 1/23-3/13 Time: 3:40-5:10pm Location: CBPS Fee: $155.00 ($165.00 NR) Parents’ Night Out Need a night out on your own? Canton Parks and Recreation is now offering special Friday evening drop off program on select dates for youth ages 5-13 held at the Canton Community Center Recreation room. Kids will enjoy movies, board games, Wii, crafts and more while parents are off enjoying a night to themselves. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Pre-registration is required in advance. Date: 1/23 Time: 6:00-8:30pm Location: CCC Fee: $10.00/child Family Science Carnival Canton Parks and Recreation is teaming up with Mad Science to give kids a science show for the ages! Children will be dazzled and entertained as they interact with Mad Scientists! Foggy dry ice storms, giant beach balls floating in the air and even a special Mad Science “burp” potion that will amaze children as they learn about chemical reactions, air pressure and the states of matter. There will also be a Slime Spectacular where children can make their own slime and bring it home and the infamous Zap Attack where they get to learn all about electricity. Pre-registration is required.
