The Nightmare Begins in Tucson Owens Scores Two Firsts at the Wild West Shootout by Ryan Neuharth | Mike Ruefer photos TUCSON, AZ | Jan. 19, 2015 - When you have the racing resume of Newport, TN veteran Jimmy Owens, there’s not a lot missing from his potential Hall of Fame career. So when he adds a couple of “firsts” to that resume, the dirt Late Model racing world is sure to take notice. On night five of the 2015 Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout, a “New Nightmare” (so to speak) began as Owens secured not only his first ever event win, it was also the first win for his new team Rowland Racing. Owens drove his Widow Wax, Sunoco Race Fuels, Pro Power, Club 29 past Jason Papich on lap twelve and held off teammate Stormy Scott over the races final ten laps to cross under the checkers first. The win also continued the week long domination for the Black Diamond/Club 29 chassis as the Ronnie Stucky/Darrell Lanigan creation is now five for five. Papich would lead away from the pole with Owens in tow followed by Wednesday night modified winner Jason Krohn, Billy Moyer, Jr., with Jimmy Mars rounding out the top five. Early disappointment would strike series points leader and two-time winner Darrell Lanigan as he would retire from the event on lap four after having to earn A-Main event starting spot by running a B-Main. Jimmy Mars would move past MB Customs customer Krohn on lap three only to relinquish that position one lap later as the two traded racing lines. At the same moment, Stormy Scott skipped past Mars’ teammate AJ Diemel for sixth position. Mars would take and keep the position from Krohn on lap six just as both Scott and Diemel moved Moyer, Jr., from fifth to seventh. Owens would begin mounting his challenge for the lead on lap nine with the front runners now encountering the back of the field. Routinely looking to the inside of Papich, the two would run side by side until Owens made what would become the winning pass on lap twelve. Just two laps later Mars would move past Papich who was beginning to have trouble with the preferred high line as the cushion crept closer to the outside wall. At the halfway mark Owens lead Mars, Papich, Krohn, Scott, Diemel, Ricky Weiss, fourteenth starting Billy Moyer, twelfth starting Tony Jackson, Jr. and Moyer, Jr. Scott would really come to life at this point, charging from fifth to second between laps fifteen and twenty setting up a ten lap shootout between the Rowland Racing teammates. Diemel would crack the top five before lap twenty as the racing throughout the top ten was fluid from lap to lap. In the second half of the top ten, Moyer moved up to sixth, seventeenth starting Chris Simpson arrived in seventh, fifteenth starting Rodney Sanders was up to eighth as Krohn faded to ninth with Weiss rounding out the group as both Moyer, Jr. and Jackson, Jr. faded. Back up front, Scott was abusing the cushion and his Club 29 chassis sparking off the wall in an all-out effort to catch Owens. The two would repeatedly race side by side in lapped traffic over the last five laps and the duo took the white flag door to door. Scott fired one last salvo entering turn one, jumped the cushion, and allowed Owens to ease way for the win.
