The No1 song in the US on this day, August 16th 1968, was People Got To Be Free by The Rascals. This song, from their album Freedom Suite, was No1 for five weeks, their third No1 single. It was certified gold on this day in 1968 and was the last of nine top 20 singles. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2010. They reunited in 2012 for a series of East Coast shows and have continued together with shows on Broadway in 2013. This song was written in response to the Martin Luther King shooting but ended up with a double meaning when it wasnt released until after the shooting of Robert F Kennedy.....Enjoy!
