The No1 song in the US on this day, August 19th 1967, was All You Need Is love by the Beatles. It was released on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album. It was specifically written for and broadcast on the first worldwide broadcast of a TV show seen in 24 countries. It came from a request that they write a song that could be understood around the world by all different people. John and Paul worked on songs separately. John, who was at the beginning of his Songs as Slogans period, had his song chosen because his message was an easy one to understand. To Pauls credit he agreed and came up with the idea of having All You Need Is Love written on poster boards in different languages. Ringos son Jason was born the same day this song went to No1. The song starts with the French National Anthem and in the orchestral ending you can hear Greensleeves, a Bach two part invention by George Martin and Glenn Millers In The Mood, for which he received royalties. McCartney sings the chorus to the Beatles 63 hit She Loves You in the fade out. Johns handwritten lyrics, that he left behind at the taping and were picked up by a BBC employee, were sold in 2005 for 1 million pounds($1,661,795 US). Heres the original broadcast of All You Need Is Love.....Enjoy!
