The North Carolina Association of REALTORS® (NCAR) has awarded an Issues Mobilization Grant in the amount of $5000 to the Wilmington Regional Association of REALTORS® (WRAR) to support the 2014 School Bond. The grant funds will be used by the Bond Committee to inform the public and market the bond. The Bond Committee is comprised of 19 members and includes: Ann David, Co-Chair, Dianne Avery, Co-Chair, Dale Pelsey-Becton, Chris Boney, Cindi Castles, Jay Corpening, Ben David, Sheila Evans, Clinton Howlett, Kathy Gresham, Livian Jones, Jennifer Kelly, Dr. Larry Mabe, David Martin, Jack Mills, Ernie Olds, Dr. Sandra Sheridan, Denise Szaloky and Lynore Young. We are extremely grateful for this grant and the support from NCAR, WRAR, the Chamber, the Bond Committee and many others. These funds are critical in helping us educate the public about the need for the 2014 Bond,” Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley said. “The bottom line is that the proposed bond will enable New Hanover County Schools to make all schools safer and upgrade them to better meet the educational needs of all students, Markley added. Jody Wainio, President of WRAR, has expressed her growing concerns on the countys growth in relation to the quality of education that children are receiving. As of today, New Hanover County schools are over capacity by 3,548 students including elementary, middle and high schools. The district is using 84 modular units to offset the overcrowding, said Wainio. Voters will consider the $160 million bond referendum on the November 2014 ballot. If approved, the bond will increase safety and security measures and upgrade technology at all schools, build a new elementary school, replace two elementary schools and renovate several existing schools. There are a total of 14 projects included in the bond proposal. For more information about all of the projects, visit the bond website at nhcs.net and click on the bright red apple.
