The Northern Territory Government is sending a special envoy of representatives to Timor-Leste for the upcoming Regional Crocodile Forum. Minister for Education, Housing, Lands, Planning and Environment, Peter Chandler, will be delivering an opening address on behalf of the Northern Territory Government at the forum on 4 September. Mr Chandler said the forum was crucially important for Timor-Leste as they face a growing crocodile population. “The people of Timor-Leste have a strong cultural bond to crocodiles. Crocodile management is a sensitive topic and we are here to simply provide advice which may guide their management strategy,” Mr Chandler said. “The Northern Territory has some of the best crocodile experts across government and industry including Mick Burns and Graeme Webb. If we can share the knowledge we have then we must. “Forums like this are opportunities to improve relations with one of our closest Asian neighbours as we hope to help Timor-Leste build their capacity to deal with issues.” The forum is an outcome from discussions between Chief Minister Adam Giles and President of Timor-Leste, H.E. Taur Matan Ruak. The forum will bring together Northern Territory crocodile management specialists and Timor-Leste officials and community leaders to discuss common challenges in crocodile management in the Northern Territory and Timor-Leste. “Whilst I am in Timor-Leste I will also meet with the Education Minister to discuss programs, initiatives and challenges faced in Timor-Leste
