The #Norwegian #Fjords: Wonderful #Nature and World Heritage Site by #Unesco The fjords are #stone and #rock carved out by ice during the ice ages. The #glacier has been cutting a U-shaped-valley which then is submerged with #sea water. Today they are a masterpiece of nature and an heritage site by Unesco. The Norwegian fjords enjoy a mild climate that prevents it from freezing and are populated by seals, porpoises and several varieties of fish, while eagles and other bird species will sail the skies. Along the banks of most of the fjords, you can find characteristic small #villages and a lush #flora thanks to the fertile soil. In many places, the land has been cultivated for thousands of years and if you visit the Fjords in May, do not miss the postcard images of the orchards in bloom along the #Hardangerfjord. The major fjords of Norway are: #Romsdalsfjord with 222 peaks, snow-capped until late summer, silhouetting against the sky; the #Geirangerfjord known for its beauty and its magnificent waterfalls, among which the most famous are the Seven Sisters #Falls; The #Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in #Norway and extends inland in the national #parks of #Jotunheimen and #Jostedalsbreen; the #Nærøyfjord and l #Aurlandsfjord one of the most beautiful and unspoiled, just 250 feet wide; the Hardangerfjor, not far from #Bergen, is especially known for its fruit trees in blossom in the spring, the glacier #Folgefonna and waterfall Vøringsfossen; the #Lysefjord known for the mountain range of Kjerag and the pulpit (Preikestolen). UNESCO has included the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord, in its prestigious list of World Heritage Sites, but it is not only them who appreciated the Norwegian fjords as a natural wonder. Also National Geographic has named the fjords as the best unspoiled destination in the world and the well-known American newspaper Chicago Tribune has included the fjords of Norway in the list of the Seven Wonders of Nature.
