The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (UARB) has confirmed the Maritime Link project represents the lowest cost option for the province to meet greenhouse gas and coal reduction laws by approving the project, with conditions, today, July 22. “This is very good news for the province and for Nova Scotia families, said Energy Minister Charlie Parker. “The independent UARB has backed up what we’ve said all along, that the Maritime Link is the lowest long-term cost alternative for electricity for ratepayers in Nova Scotia. “We welcome the UARB approval along with its very sensible recommendations to make the project even more favourable for ratepayers.” The project is approved with conditions for Emera to obtain market-priced energy from Nalcor, the Crown utility in Newfoundland and Labrador. The UARB made this decision in an attempt to ensure the lowest, fairest rates and benefits for Nova Scotia ratepayers. “The board has outlined what Emera must do to ensure the best deal for the province and like all Nova Scotians, we expect Emera will do the work required to follow those recommendations,” said Mr. Parker. “I want to thank the UARB for their hard work. The review process was open, transparent and thorough.” The Maritime Link is 180-kilometre subsea cable that will deliver hydroelectric power from Newfoundland and Labrador to Nova Scotia. The project is one component of the larger Muskrat Falls project which will help diversify the Atlantic Provinces energy mix while creating thousands of jobs in the area. “The Maritime Link is Nova Scotia’s best option to secure its clean energy future,” said Mr. Parker.
