The ON TIME III is steaming back and forth today with her new aluminum wheelhouse, designed and built by maintenance manager Erik Gilley (pictured wiring it up over the weekend). Its bigger, higher and improves on the old one in a number of ways: Replaces old disintegrating wooden pilot house with one of aluminum, rugged, able to withstand high winds, writes ferry co-owner Peter Wells. More room overhead for wiring, radios and switches are protected from the elements. Slide-down windows on three sides. Hard wired marine radio. To install it, Peter and Erik hired Russell Wendt of M.V. Boat Hauling. On the Edgartown side, Russell drove his truck aboard the ON TIME III. The ferry crossed over to the spare slip and the ON TIME II took over the back and forth duties. Erik and Peter dismantled the old wheelhouse, and Russell lifted the new one into place. (The stand for the helm and controls -- the thing in the middle painted green -- remains the same. Its the overall housing thats been changed.) Here are three final images of the new wheelhouse, with Erik working on the wiring on Saturday. Pictures by Peter. New ON TIME III name board by Erik.
