The Oakland A’s came into Detroit tonight and ended the Tigers 3 game winning streak by beating the Tigers 8-6. Anibal Sanchez started the game for the Tigers. He went 5 innings and gave up 4 runs. The Tigers were tailing the A’s 4 -2 as the Tigers batted in the bottom of the 5. With 1 out, Jackson singled to left. Torii Hunter then tried to bunt his way on but popped out. This brought up Cabrera and Cabrera did what he has done lately which is hit a 2 run homer to tie the game. Sanchez was done for the night. Manage Leyland then turned to his bullpen which had been effective but that was not the case tonight. Jose Alvarez came on to pitch the 6th. Nate Freiman came on to pinch hit and promptly singled to left. Callaspo then singled up the middle. Daric Barton then singled to right, knocking in Freiman. The A’s then tried to sacrifice but Cabrera was able to pick up the bunt quickly and get Callaspo at 2nd. They just missed getting Stephen Vogt at 1st. Coco Crisp then singled to left to knock in Barton. That ended Alvarez’s night. Alburqurque then came on to pitch and got Jed Lowrie to ground into a double play. Alburqurque stayed on to pitch the 7th. He gave up a 1 out walk to Brandon Moss. After Yoenis Cespedes flew out, Freiman walked Callaspo singled to knock in Moss. Alburqurque was able to end the inning by striking out Barton. The A’s would then add another run in the 8th. With Bonderman now pitching he gave up a single to Vogt . After Crisp flew out, Lowrie then knocked in Vogt with a double. The Tigers got 1 back in the 8th when Victor Martinez led off with a home run. They would actually load the bases in that inning. After Martinez hit the homer, Tuiasosopo came up pinch hitting for Dirks. He was robbed on a great play by Crisp in right center. Infante then made the 2nd out of the inning. However then Pena and Inglesias singled and Jackson walked to load the bases, but Torii Hunter struck out. They had also loaded the bases in the 7th. With 2 out Jackson walked and Hunter singled to center sending Jackson to 3rd. The A’s tried to get Cabrera to go after 2 pitches out of the strike zone. However once they realized he was not biting they put him on intentionally. They then brought on Sean Doolittle to create a lefty on lefty situation with Fielder coming up. Prince flew out to left center, just short of the warning track. The Tigers did get a run back in the 9th to get within 2 of the A’s however A’s closer Grant Balfour, who started the 9th was able to get Infante to ground out with Martinez on 3rd. The difference in the game was the bullpen of the 2 teams. While the Tigers were able to get chances against the A’s pen they could not get the big hit with runners on. The Tiger bullpen unfortunately brought gasoline and matches to the party which are not a good combination. Game 2 of this 4 game series takes place tomorrow with Justin Verlander taking the mound for the Tigers to try to right his and the team’s ship. With the loss the idle Tribe moved to 5 ½ games back. Kansas City who beat Tampa Bay moved to 10 ½ back.
