The Occult Detective archetype depends on the protagonist being largely human, and vastly out-powered by the forces said individual faces. They are a riff off the classic hard-boiled detective of the pulp/noir eras. Once you start leveling them up D&D style, they become something else. For example, the Dresden novels started out largely in the Occult Detective vein, but now exist as a supernatural epic fantasy where the character is on a chosen one arc.
