The Ohio Valley Farmers’ Market will host our 7th annual THE BIG GREEN EVENT this Saturday from 9 to noon at our Bellaire location on 32nd and Union Streets. Special activities include a walk-in butterfly tent by Butterflies from Heather. Heather Tokas, is a native of Brooke County and a 1989 graduate of Bethany College. She is internationally known for her enthusiasm for butterflies. Her live butterflies and walk-in butterfly tents are featured at special events including Wildlife Diversity Day and Earth Day at the WV State Capitol and various fairs and festivals. Tokas has been raising and studying butterflies since 1974. Her business, Butterflies from Heather, was established in 2000, the first butterfly business in West Virginia. In 2004 she successfully lobbied legislators to create WV Monarch Butterfly Day. It is now observed September 12th. In 2005 she established WV Monarch Butterfly State Festival. This festival is being used as a model nationally and internationally. She is author and co-illustrator of the childrens book, Bound to be a Butterfly. In the event of rain, Tokas cannot set up her butterfly tent and will reschedule her appearance. In addition, the JB Green Team will have information on recycling and will be joined by mascots Jeff and Bell. Representatives of Belmont County Soil and Water will have a watershed demonstration and the Schrader Center will have a worm composting exhibit. They will be offering indoor worm composting bins which includes the bin and red wigglers for $5. Vendor, Deborah Sedoski, of Hilltop Coffee Company will be sampling French pressed Peruvian decaffeinated coffee. This organic coffee uses water to make it decaffeinated and is dried on rocks. She will also be giving a sample of Peru, Special and Sunrise Blend and will display coffee beans before they are roasted. Anyone purchasing coffee equipment that is green in color will receive a special gift. In honor of National Lasagna Week, Diane Conroy will sample lasagna made with homemade ricotta and her award winning sauce!!! Providing musical entertainment will be Shane Pasqualla on acoustic guitar. Shane is making his third appearance at the market. Kids are welcome to join the fun at the Lil Farmers’ Club which will be under the guidance of the Belmont County Master Gardeners. They will be tending the garden and making recycled sun catchers. At the market tent, shoppers can register for door prizes including a set of Ball heritage jars, market baskets with goodies provided by the vendors, Be Green Packaging items and a worm composter. Market sponsor, Belmont Savings Bank, will offer free tote bags, and the market provides complimentary coffee. Also at the market tent, visitors can sample Cross Roads Farm pastured chicken prepared by manager Meggan Pasqualla. She will show shoppers how to use one chicken to create multiple meals. The OVFM is a participant in the USDA SNAP program made possible through the sponsorship of Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes. In the Veggies Bins, vendors will supply fresh produce including blueberries, fresh herbs, zucchini, red and green tomatoes, summer squash, potatoes including Yukon Gold, Kennebec, and new red potatoes, sweet corn, beets, green beans, cucumbers, garlic, lettuce, sweet and hot peppers, onions, Swiss chard, and more I am sure :) For Your Shopping Pleasure, select from pastured meats and eggs, dried herbs and mixes, gourmet popcorn, baked goods including pies, sourdough bread, cookies and other sweets, fudge, pickles, honey, granola, organic teas, maple syrup, crafts, personal care products, jams and jellies, locally roasted coffee, jewelry, needlework, and Fine As Frogs Hair returns from vacation with handmade soaps and fresh-cut flowers! Our little vendors will also offer fresh-squeezed lemonade. Nothing but water, lemons and sugar :) Its refreshingly yummy! And dont forget, the OVFM also operates on Thursdays from 3-6 pm at the Bel-Morr Market at exit 208 Belmont/Morristown. See you at the market.
