The Old Bike (House Sparrows), Jonathan Pointer Graphite on Art board 29.7 X 42 cms I created this drawing last year. Whilst out in a little Scottish town I came across an old bike in front of a traditional Butchers shop. Id been looking for such a backdrop for one of my favourite birds, the House Sparrow for some time. The old bike was one that, decades ago, would have delivered the meat and produce from the shop. It was very much an antique and had a marvellous aged look with rusted metal and cracked leather on the bikes saddle. As I had only my mobile phone with me I took a few photos and was pleased to see, when I returned to England, that they were detailed enough to allow me to draw this piece. House Sparrows love living with people when we are not too tidy and allow them plenty of spaces to nest, they are a declining species in the UK now in part because we are too tidy! In the era that this bike would have been used though Sparrows would have been common and I like the timeless image of this drawing when we lived in quieter, slower paced era and when Sparrows lived with us.
