The Old Dominion One Day 100 Mile Cross Country Run has a very special feel. Old school sure, but its much deeper than that. The guy doing the timing has been timing every OD100 horse race since 1974, and every OD100 run since its inception 35 years ago (this year the 36th running). The horseback rider who created OD for both the horses and runners, Pat Botts (who also ran the race many times, and was first woman once, and has 4 buckles) came to speak to us and tell us about the history. One piece of the history? That this was the first footrace of 100 miles (Western States has acknowledged in its history that it was an 89 mile race until the course was lengthened in the early 80s to 100 miles), although Pat makes no bones about it, OD doesnt happen without Wendell Robie and Gordy Ainsleigh. We got an amazing and heartfelt tribute to D-day from current RD Ray Waldron, a little American Revolution history, and the charm and intimacy of this event cant be overstated. I feel blessed and privileged to be here, in the company of good friend Andy Kumeda. Running great distances is always an adventure, and tomorrow my most epic adventure begins. Im gripped by fear, but it is in these moments that I know Im alive, as Im no longer paralyzed by this fear, but inspired to be present and move forward. How do you run 600 miles? Just like any other distance: one step at a time. Game on... well, after a little nap. Planning on being done by Midnight tomorrow. Whether by Midnight Eastern Time or Pacific Time remains to be seen. When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. -Marcus Aurelius
