The One Nutrient All Men Should Consume Dr. John H. Maher, valleycenterholistic Over 50% of men in their 60s and as many as 90% in their 70s or older have symptoms of an enlarged prostate (BPH). Each year over 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 30,000 will die of it. As with so many health concerns, with the prostate at ounce of prevention is worth cure. One nutrient that one ought to consume or supplement is lycopene. Lycopene is a plant nutrient (phytonutrient) in the carotene family. Carotenes give many fruits and vegetables their red, pink, yellow and orange color. Lycopenes are redish and found mostly in tomatoes, but also watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava, apricots, rose hips papaya, mangoes, red cabbage, red pepper, asparagus and carrots. Lycopene is more absorbable in cooked tomatoes, and soups, sauces and even ketchup are good sources. Lycopene is fat soluable so is best eaten or supplemented with a meal containing some fat. Scientific studies show that supplementing with 15 mg of lycopene daily, inhibited the progression of benign hypertrophic prostate (BHP). The authors of the same study noted, lycopene is a promising nutrient for the prevention of prostate cancer the most common cancer in men. One should start before the age of fifty, as studies suggest that although lycopene inhibits progression of BHP and initiation of cancer, it does not reverse BHP and is not a treatment for prostate cancer.
