The Oregon Department of Forestrys Incident Management Team 2 is being dispatched to assume command of the Two Bulls Fires - two new wildfires that were reported by the Black Butte Lookout at 12:48 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, burning 10 miles northwest of Bend, Oregon, and that quickly burned towards each other. The wind- and terrain-driven fires have prompted evacuations in areas west of Bend, with evacuees being directed to go to Cascade Middle School in Bend. The two fires were reported burning in a mix of Deschutes National Forest and private lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry. Although the fires haven’t burned completely together, they are being managed as one incident. Firefighters will continue work throughout Saturday evening the night to establish containment of these fires. The fires are staffed with 3 hand crews, including the Redmond and Prineville Hotshot crews, 13 engines, 3 air tankers, 2 helicopters, a dozer, and a water tender. ODFs IMT 2 will assume command of the fires Fire behavior on these fires shows how dry conditions are on the forest and rangelands east of the Cascades. Although it’s early June, the large logs and other downed woody debris are as dry as if it was July. As school gets out and people begin heading out to recreate, fire officials want to remind everyone to be careful with fire. Find out before you head out if campfires are allowed, and make sure any campfire is completely put out if someone isn’t there to watch it.
