The PAIN Exhibit The PAIN Exhibit is a visual arts exhibit through which people with chronic pain express some facet of their pain experience. Its mission is to educate health care providers and the public about chronic pain while giving a voice to the many who suffer in silence. Mark Collen, a resident of Sacramento, CA, created the PAIN Exhibit out of necessity. As a result of a back injury and failed surgery he was left with chronic, neuropathic pain and its side effects, including depression and insomnia. I looked normal and healthy, and doctors did not understand what I was going through, Collen says. During a particularly difficult time, he began to create a piece of art about what he was experiencing. He took all his negative emotions and put them into the mixed media piece entitled Chronic Pain. Finally, Collen had found a form of release and moreover, a way to fully communicate his pain experience with his doctor. The result was improved care. He realized creating art about pain serves a dual purpose - it is both cathartic and the most effective means of communicating pain and its impact on ones life. The PAIN Exhibit is available online at PainExhibit.org.
