The PM’s office has been defiled by many BUT nothing and no one can beat the outrageous abuse of power done by Indira Gandhi when she was the Prime Minister of India. The Emergency: 1975-1977 has to be the darkest chapter of Indian History. Today is the anniversary of ‘The Emergency’ When Indira was proved guilty of electoral corruption, she imposed a state of emergency in India. This is what happened during the Emergency period: 1. Fundamental rights of all citizens were revoked 2. State treasury was drained for Indira Gandhis campaigns 3. “Representation of the People” act was drafted to clear Indira Gandhi from the Allahabad high court ruling 4. 50,000 or more people were jailed 5. Lok Sabhas life was extended by one year 6. The Prime Minister was declared to be above the Lok Sabha 7. Innocent people were jailed and tortured without any charges 8. Some political and religious parties were banned 9. Doordarshan and All India Radio were used for propaganda of the Congress party. 10. While the mother was busy silencing the dissenting voices, her younger son Sanjay was busy getting thousands of men sterilized in vasectomy camps, many of them teens and bachelors. Unsterilized medical equipments and unhygienic conditions left many patients gangrened. They had to undergo amputations later on. The elder son, Rajiv was more sophisticated as he was busy playing the “middleman” in fighter plane deals with Swedish company Saab-Scania and other overseas companies 11. In the name of the beautification of the city, many societies were demolished without alternative arrangements But sadly, Indira Gandhi is remembered as a Devi/Goddess by many of us Indians. Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojna, Indira Awaas Yojana, Indira Gandhi National Widow pension Scheme and Indira Vikas Patra are standing testimonials of it. Oh and yes! The Indira Gandhi International Airport too :-)
