The Painter One of the most mysterious painters of the world was showcasing his latest art collection in town. This painter was mysterious for many reasons. For one, his latest works looked similar to his previous collections; yet there was a distinct uniqueness in what he newly presented. Also, the painter would have just one art show every year and his paintings would never be on sale. He would earn money from visitors’ fees and sponsorships. Yet, he always seemed content. Head Monk had seen his exhibition a few years ago, and requested Sensei to allow the monks and him to visit the latest showing. Sensei agreed. The monks went on the last day of the show and later on even managed to request the painter to visit the Monastery to meet Sensei. When the painter arrived, Sensei greeted him, and asked him to say a few words. The painter said, “I have been showing my art around the world for the past twenty years, with just one mission. The day I accomplish my mission, I will retire.” The monks were surprised and intrigued. Sensei gestured towards Head Monk to speak. Head Monk bowed to Sensei and to the painter and then gently said, “When I saw the paintings for the second time today, I realized that the paintings all along were the same. Only their frames had changed. I believe that your real art creation is in making very unique frames - such that the same painting looks different every time its frame is changed.” The painter began to sob and bowed to Sensei and Head Monk. He said, “Today, I have found my master. My mission of being discovered for my real capabilities has been achieved. I will retire now and forever be at the service of the Monastery.” Sensei clapped three times and said, “We are all the same, but in different frames. That is why we are unique.
