The Pakistan Penal Code prohibits blasphemy against any recognized religion, providing penalties ranging from a fine to death. These laws were enacted during the regime of Zia-ul-Haq. These laws are based on teachings of Islam propagated by fanatic mullahs. On account of Blasphemy laws mainly members of minorities were victimized, but even Muslims also suffered. Voices have been raised against these brutal laws in Pakistan & other countries. Human Rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch are campaigning against these laws. Main supporters of these laws in Pakistan are fanatic Mullahs, & because of their nuisance value & weak undemocratic governments, these laws could not be abrogated. Accused of blasphemy , while undergoing trial Christians have been murdered by jail inmates or even police. Apologists of Islam will say these laws are against the teachings of Islam, but there is no dearth of supporters of these laws in public, especially illiterate sections. Victims either fled to other countries or were executed. They say Islam is a religion of peace. Recently a 70-year-old Briton suffering from paranoid schizophrenia is facing a death sentence in Pakistan. This is no joke Karachi Christians demonstrate against the 1998 blasphemy law that has led to persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan. This was reported by The Guardian 29 September 2014.
