The Paleo Diet Most people who havent seen me for the last 1 year, usually dont recognise me when they see me now. People whove seen me when I was in school- 10th standard, have no problem recognising me now. I lost 20kgs, and 8 inches off my waist. I normalised my lipid profile and am faster, stronger and more energetic than I have been all my life. Ive been obese all my life except for a short duration in college, when I used to cycle a lot. Even then, I was skinny fat, (thin with a slight potbelly) Its all gone now. This is how I did it. The Paleo diet. I dont have a six pack, yet. But I have a feeling I could get there if I tried a little. Something I couldnt dream off even 6 months ago. Its not the exercise, I can assure you. Its 80% diet, 15% sleep and stress control, 5% smart exercise. Ofcourse not! No one can give exact numbers for this kind of stuff, this is just to give you an idea as to what is most important, and in what order. So, what is the Paleo diet? It is a collection of ideas on how we shoud eat, based on how we evolved. It started off as a diet that tried to mimic the diet of our ancestors. In its most simplistic form, it means, eat like a caveman. That isnt how I see it. For me, it is eating foods that are nutritionally dense. Foods that are recognisable on the table as they are when they are in their natural state. Eating food the way it was consumed before the advent of agriculture. What foods are Paleo? Meat, Fish, Eggs, Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Leafy vegetables, tubers, starchy vegetables, coconut, coconut oil, ghee, butter, real palm oil. Not Paleo Grains-Rice, wheat, oats, barley and anything made from that stuff.- all those healthy whole grains will f***ing kill you! Legumes Sugar, artificial sweeteners All packaged foods- bread, buns, biscuits, stuff that is made in a factory. Its making you sick and fat. The FMCG manufacturers get fat wallets because you think that stuff is healthy. Vegetable oils- Sunflower, saffola, rapeseed etc Dalda is poison. What? So, youre now thinking, fine, but what does this crazy person want me to eat? Eat the curries. Dont eat the rice, dosa, chappathi, upma, grain based trash. How much? As much as it takes you to stop feeling hungry. No counting calories. Just eat real food. Its not a quantity issue. Its a Quality issue. Where? Eat at home, as far as possible. Get your family on board. Tell them to tolerate this experiment for a month. Show them the results after a month. They will be convinced. If you must eat out, pick the paleo option. I suggest getting friendly with all the nearby non-veg hotels. To give you an example of how I eat. I will eat till my hunger goes away. Sometimes I stuff myself to the point of nausea, because these days Im trying to put on some weight. In the morning- 2 eggs(yolks and all) with a handful of stir fried veggies(not deep fried) The stir fry is done in ghee, cococnut oil or butter, depending on what I feel like. Takes 5 minutes to make. Even for a bachelor. Along with a handful of meat- Chicken, beef, pork, whatever. If its meat, I will wolf it down. It might be a curry, or it might be slow cooked, or steak style. Afternoon Meat again. Sometimes fish, if Im at home. Sometimes Veggies, occasionally a single Idli(not paleo) This is what gets snuck into my lunch box inspite of repeated requests not to. But some battles are difficult to win. Evening Any guesses? Yes, thats right, Meat and fish again. Veggies on the side. Coffee without milk or sugar, if Im going to the gym.(twice a week) Sometimes tea without milk or sugar. Vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, can be had as the traditional curries. Doesnt matter. It should taste good, it should fill you up. Meat, how much? I love meat, so I eat it 3 times a day, everyday. You dont have to be like that. The idea is to get a source of first class protein in your diet daily. And you should ideally be eating 1gram of this 1st class protein for every kilogram of bodyweight. So if you weigh a 100kgs, you should be eating atleast a 100grams of meat or fish a day. The rest of it, if you feel like, can be plant material. That is what worked for me. Not everyone needs to be like that. You can eat less meat and get by,but without eating the meat and fat,it will be difficult to control hunger. But Doc,Im a vegetarian! I will come up with a post to help you sad people(chill! just kidding- no Vegan death threats please), but I suggest you start eating some fish and eggs atleast. Your body will thank you for it. Summary Eat real food, mostly plants. Basic minimum of meat (1 to 1.5gm per kg body weight) more if you want. Eat as much as it takes to deal with your hunger Eat 3 times a day, less if you like, but not more than 4 times. Dont eat grains, legumes, or foods made from them. DO NOT COUNT CALORIES This should be stress free, not neurosis inducing. PS- You dont need to weigh and measure your meat consumption. Some people like exact numbers, the 1 to 1.5gms per kg is meant as a guideline. I eat faaaaaar more than that.
