The Palestinian Mural Project Yesterday, August 17, 2014, Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, kicked off a mural initiative for Palestine on the lawn of the World Beat Center of Balboa Park in San Diego. Motivated by the recent brutal, indiscriminate and murderous attack on the civilian population of Gaza, the mural intends to depict the status of Palestinians currently living under occupation and in exile, the ongoing Israeli apartheid and ethnic cleansing. In collaboration with the Art Miles Mural Project and Al-Awda, artists and artivists all over the world have begun work on the creation and facilitation of the 440 individual 5’ x 12’ or 5,280 feet (1 mile) of murals as a visual documentation of modern history and its impact on the Palestinian people. Activist Joanne Tawfilis of Al-Awda San Diego lead this effort. The award-winning Art Miles Mural Project began in 1997 when 350 orphans in Bosnia-Hercegovina painted a mural on a bullet-riddled bed sheet. Since that time, the Art Miles Mural Project has completed more than 4,000 murals on canvas, and many of these were recently exhibited at the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris. The Palestinian Mural Project will be created as part of a visual documentation of the Palestinian suffering by the public, similar to the Manhattan Memorial Mural currently in progress.
