The Palio of Asti Asti is a traditional festival that has medieval roots born during the celebrations of the patron saint San Secondo and culminates with a race horse bareback , or without a saddle . The feast of the patron saint , takes place continuously since the twelfth century and the first news of the race, cited by the chronicler William Ventura , date back to the third quarter of the thirteenth century, and also takes place continuously , except for two breaks of seventy years in the nineteenth century and thirty in the twentieth century. The race, which was once the festivities held during the month of May and it ran " in the long run " through the district Maestra ( the current Corso Alfieri ) , since 1967 takes place in a special circuit (or " lap " ) every third Sunday of September. Since 1988 the race has been held in the central Piazza Alfieri of Asti. In the early afternoon begins the parade , starting from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, then winds through the streets of the historic center and ends in Piazza Alfieri , where he currently holds the race. The parade opens with the group at the turn of the Captain of the Palio and magistrates . The Captain is responsible for the supervision of the event, with the power to impose suspensions in the event of unlawful conduct on the part of the jockeys during the course of the race. Immediately after the leading group , parade winners of the last edition of the Palio , followed by the other participants. At the end of the parade there is the Northern League , an ancient symbol of Free Municipalities , which brings with it the Sendallo depicting San Secondo on horseback and the insignia of the town of Asti . The clients each year is entrusted to a Master of contemporary art of international renown. In the past, the jockeys ( at the time called " pages " ), each set off from your hotel or district of the city, by the Brotherhood , College or association on which it ran . Were usually accompanied by other men on horseback (also with the same colors ) and crowds of members and sympathizers , to the sound of trumpets, drums and hunting horns . The meeting point was the so-called " pylon ", once deputy to the start of the race " in the long run ." A repetition of ancient rituals Palio make this an event not to be missed , with a charm all its own , not according to the perhaps most famous Palio di Siena.
