The Panama Canal was one of Theodore Roosevelt’s pet projects, and one of his more controversial ones. That controversy didnt stop him from going down to the isthmus to look in on the construction though. In fact, he became the first sitting President to make an official trip outside the country when on November 9, 1906 he traveled down south to check up on the workers, and climb up onto some excavation equipment.
