The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will on Tuesday commence the screening of all the 26 aspirants contesting the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State. According to the time-table approved last month by the party’s national leadership, the submission of nomination form by aspirant ended on Monday. The primary election is scheduled for August 24. Among the aspirants who showed interest in running on the PDP’s platform are Josephine Anenih, a former Women Affairs Minister and wife of the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT, Chairman; the Senate Committee Chairman on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Andy Uba; Special Adviser to the President on Technical Matters and Secretary of Sure-P, Akachukwu Nwankpo; and former Nigerian ambassador to South Korea, Jerry Ugokwe. Others are Nicholas Ukachukwu, former Senator Emmanuel Anosike, Obinna Uzoh, former Minister Ikeobasi Mokelu, Michael Okoye, Sylvester Okonkwo, Ugochukwu Okeke, Tony Nwoye, Linda Chuba-Ikpeazu, Alexander Obiogbolu, Walter Okeke, Charles Odunukwe, Eucharia Azodo, Donatus Okonkwo, Chuwuka Onyema, Onyenisi Obianuju, Kramer Ifunayachukwu, Adimachukwu Calista and Chinyere Udemba. Most of the aspirants were at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja to beat the deadline for the submission of the nomination form. Each of the male aspirants paid a total of N11 million to the party with the Expression of Interest Form costing N1 million and the Nomination Form N10 million. The female aspirants also purchased the Expression of Interest Form for N1 million but paid N5 million for the Nomination Form bringing the total to N6 million. The aspirants had agreed not to pick any of them as the consensus candidate of the party, preferring to go into the contest. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, insisted on Tuesday that it would not recognize Ken Emeakayi the Chairman of the PDP in Anambra State. The party had in statement last week said among the three people claiming to be the state chairmen of the party, it had decided to recognize Mr. Emeakayi, saying it took the action after consultations with the major stakeholders in the state. However, speaking in Abuja at the Stakeholder Conference with media professionals and civil society organisations on voter register optimization, plans for continuous voter registration, INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega said the Commission would recognize Ejike Oguebego who won the state congress of March 2012. “We monitored the state congress in March 2012 and we know who emerged winner and we have the record,” Mr Jega said. “The claim that has been made is that court rule against the person who won the election at the congress.
