The Pet Help Desk: Key to Keeping Pets in Homes Mike Fry is considered a pioneer in the no kill movement. It was Mike who offered the city a free, confidential consult in April of 2013 which was refused. He later spoke at our free public workshop in July of 2013, having volunteered his time to help us because he believes in our potential. Mike has since started a new venture called No Kill Learning. Mikes blog about the value of a Pet Help Desk is one of many blogs worth a read; we hope youll take some time to visit his Facebook page and web site. (This excerpt was taken from the link below.) No matter what [people say is the reason they want to surrender a pet], recent research shows that about 60% of them are reachable through a well-run pet retention program, a key part of which needs to be a pet help desk, that can help people through a wide range of pet-related issues. It is important, rewarding and yet strangely complex work. Part of the complexity comes into play because of a strange social phenomenon that is big in the USA: We expect our public social interactions to be fast and superficial. Yet the reasons families are giving up their pets are often complex and can involve issues that are deeply personal. As a result, people show up at the shelter expecting to turn over their pets in quick, simple transactions, and do not plan to get into the personal issues causing them to get rid of their pets. Instead of explaining what is going on, they frequently make up stories: I am moving; My fiance is allergic; I just dont have time anymore. With a little constructive and nonjudgmental questioning, however, the real reasons for surrender can be discovered, and frequently solved. This is one of the main reasons many shelters are moving to a policy that requires people to schedule appointments to surrender pets. . . a pet help desk, and surrender-by-appointment policies in shelters, send a clear message that the decision to get rid of a pet is an important one that needs to be taken seriously.
