[The Petition to Halt the Trash Contract] As of just now, 541 citizens have signed an online petition asking the City Council members to halt the trash contract. The petition is sponsored by The San Angelo Connection and was posted online Sunday morning at 9am on this page. It took 23 hours, 57 minutes to reach the 500 signature goal. Read the petition here: t.co/RAujaGymau Tuesday is the second reading of the new, higher ordinance rates for trash collection and landfill use. If council fails to vote to approve those rates again tomorrow, it jeopardizes the contract that was predicated on those rates. The contract with Republic Services was approved 4-3 at the last council meeting. The petition brings to light that some council members have been offered perks from Republic and at least one council member played golf with a republic official prior to the vote that approved the Citys 10-year, $450 million contract with Republic. That opens the wider question of how according to law that some dealings with large vendors may be legal, however its a judgement call if they are ethical.
