The Philippine Red Cross expresses its deep sense of loss on the passing of a great Filipino humanitarian, Dr. Emilio Yap Sr. I have often referred to Dr. Emilio Yap as a great humanitarian and philanthropist. In all the disasters in the country, there was never a time when Dr. Yap and his family excused themselves from supporting those who have been severely affected. Even his birthdays were often used to elicit support for the vulnerable, needy and the downtrodden. In every disaster, the PRC was called to join him around his wonderful table. But even without our asking, he has unfailingly provided assistance and support to our cause. We are one with the family in grieving his loss. His passing creates a very huge void for the many who are in need of a helping hand. In his lifetime, the Red Cross has conferred to him several awards, the highest of which is the Gold Humanitarian Service Cross, for his outstanding service in alleviating the suffering of humanity. “The world was better because he was there” is a statement that fits Dr. Yap, as it does any man of his stature and philanthropic bent. I also suffer a deep personal loss because Dr. Yap has always called me whenever there is a disaster. The Red Cross became stronger in facing disasters because of people like him. But more important than what he gave, he inspired and created confidence and renewed our faith in the goodness of men. He is a great loss to the nation and he will sorely be missed.
